Cricket: Scotland beat Jersey at Goldenacre

MAZARS GRANGE’S George Munsey showed just how dangerous he can be with the bat on Tuesday, hitting 75 as Scotland eased to a win over Jersey in their final warm-up match before the ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers.

At Heriot’s Goldenacre ground, Scotland were expected to post a victory, but what will have pleased head coach Grant Bradburn most was that a number of batsmen who got time in the middle.

None more so than 22-year-old left-handed opener Munsey, whose runs came from just 44 balls with nine 4s and three 6s included.

Wicketkeeper Matt Cross made 21 and then skipper Preston Mommsen, of Carlton, finished on 29 not out as the Scots posted 199-5 from their 20 overs.

On Monday Jersey had been thumped by Afghanistan at Myreside and when they lost two wickets in the second over in this one, it looked like they were in trouble again.

Safyaan Sharif was the man to take the wickets. Indeed they came one ball after another, but he could not quite take a hat-trick.

After a slight rain delay, Jersey’s innings was cut to 15 overs and via Duckworth/Lewis they needed 163 to win.

They never looked like chasing that, with Scotland’s bowlers keen to get into form ahead of the Group B opener with the UAE.

Sharif finished with 3-20, while spinner Michael Leask took 3-10 and also took a couple of good catches. Heriot’s Mark Watt finished wicketless in the 69-run win.
