Cricket: Saltires more than ready to keep the Dragons at bay

PETE Steindl, the Saltires coach, claims his players will not rest on their laurels when they entertain the Welsh Dragons at Bothwell Castle Policies tomorrow despite the Scots still being on a high following Monday’s excellent win over Nottinghamshire.

However, the national coach believes there is more to come from a still-developing team. He said: “We will look to put in a more polished performance than we did against Notts. Of course we were pleased with the win and we raised our standards compared with the game against Surrey. But we are striving to improve every time we take to the field.”

Having named an unchanged thirteen-man squad on Thursday, Steindl is likely to stick with the starting line-up that began against Notts. That would mean Carlton’s Fraser Watts sitting the match out in favour of the Grange batsman Ryan Flannigan while Calum MacLeod and Josh Davey will continue their successful opening partnership which saw them post a record 108 without loss against the Outlaws. Whether Steindl opts to tweak the order in other ways remains to be seen.

Tomorrow’s match is Scotland’s first competitive fixture against county opposition at the Uddingston venue and only their third against Glamorgan, the previous two in the 1980s having gone in county’s favour.
