Cricket: Malinga is the home hero in Super Over

TILLAKARATNE Dilshan cracked a scintillating 76 but it was Lasith Malinga’s tight bowling that took Sri Lanka to a thrilling Super Over victory against New Zealand.

New Zealand, led by Rob Nicol (58) and Martin Guptill (38), posted 174 for seven at Pallekele. Sri Lanka’s response saw Dilshan and captain Mahela Jayawardene (44) add 80 runs in seven overs. Needing eight runs off the last over, bowled by Tim Southee, Sri Lanka got seven to finish on 174 for six and force the Super Over where three batsmen face six balls from a rival bowler. Sri Lanka scored 13 runs off Southee and Malinga conceded just eight runs while removing Guptill.

In the initial 20 overs, Sri Lanka had needed one run off the last ball but Lahiru Thirimanne was dismissed by a freak run-out. A fielder’s throw seemed to have been dropped by Ross Taylor but replays showed he had knocked it on to the stumps and Thirimanne was short of his crease.
