Cricket: Greenock lose stalwart Brian Campbell

Cricket followers in the West have been saddened by the untimely passing at 62 of Greenock stalwart Brian Campbell. A talented all-rounder, who made his first-team debut as a schoolboy in the 1960s, Brian was the son of club legend “Bunter” Campbell and brother of recent Greenock CC President and ex-captain David. Brian is especially fondly remembered at Glenpark for a magnificent 9 for 24 return against Ayr in 1967, the best-ever analysis by a Greenock bowler in the Western Union.

His batting assault on Kilmarnock’s legendary Aussie pro Bob Massie, which claimed an unlikely victory in the 1970 West League Cup semi-final, was also a highlight.
