Cricket: Carlton the masters of Twenty20

Carlton regained the Murgitroyd national Twenty20 title yesterday to prove once again they are the best club in Scotland at the shortened format of the game.

To get to the finals day at Poloc’s Shawholm ground, Carlton had won the regional Masterton event with a final defeat of Watsonians at Grange Loan a few weeks back.

They took that form into their national semi-final with fellow Cricket Scotland Eastern Premier Division outfit Arbroath.

The men from Lochlands made a useful 162-4, but Carlton reached their winning target for the loss of seven wickets. Preston Mommsen made 36 not out and Jamie Kerr 35.

In the other semi, West region winners East Kilbride beat Kelso. Missing Mommsen in the final, Carlton made 152-8 from their 20 overs. Against an East Kilbride team featuring former Carlton favourite Ross Lyons, overseas amateur Michael Herdman top scored with 44 while Charles Legget was promoted to open the batting. Steve Gilmour hit three sixes in an over.

EK were 31-0 off four overs, but two wickets for Gordon Drummond in the fifth over swung the match, with EK’s
innings ending on 133-7.
