CMJ is remembered at St Paul’s

A HOST of former England cricket captains attended a memorial service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London yesterday for former Test Match Special commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins.

David Gower, Michael Atherton, Michael Vaughan and Andrew Strauss were in the congregation to pay tribute to CMJ, as he was affectionately known. He died on New Year’s Eve at the age of 67.

Martin-Jenkins had a spell as cricket writer for The Scotsman from 1987 and 1991. TMS colleague Jonathan Agnew tweeted: “Beautiful service for CMJ in the most spectacular setting. 2,300 people singing really lifts you off your feet.”

Sir Tim Rice said at the service: “Christopher was a gentle, considerate man of charm, impeccable manners and shambolic in terms of anything electronic... He represented a brilliant balance between tradition and the inevitability of change.

“He was always honest.”
