Berrington ton adds weight to Flannigan’s ambition for Saltires

RUN-hungry Ryan Flannigan is ready to follow Richie Berrington’s example by leading the Saltires to victory against the Welsh Dragons today. The Scots go into this afternoon’s Cardiff clash on a high following their stunning T20 win over Bangladesh in midweek.

Flannigan was able to watch from the sidelines as Berrington smashed a superb century in that game.

But the Grange man wants to play the lead role as the Saltires bid to end a five-game losing sequence in the CB40 Trophy.

Flannigan top-scored in last week’s defeat to Notts and was left stranded on 30no as his mates threw away their victory chance against Somerset seven days earlier.

The 24 year-old said: “It has been a tough season in many ways but beating Bangladesh has got the guys flying.

“Watching Richie bat was just awesome – he did the same on my debut against India A two years ago with his first international century.

“It’s great to have a match-winner like Richie in your side but all the guys are capable on their day.

“Having a CB40 match straight after beating Bangladesh is perfect because we can take some really positive momentum into Sunday’s game.

“Playing a significant part in a victory over a county is a personal goal of mine because it hasn’t quite happened yet. I was down to bat No.3 in the home win against Notts but Calum [MacLeod] and Josh [Davey] won the game on their own.

“Then I did get in against Glamorgan and was feeling good when that game was rained off.”

Flannigan dropped out of the side for several games in mid-season only to re-emerge as a lower order “finisher”.

“In the last couple of matches I’ve been batting lower down and I’m really enjoying the new role.

“It’s very frustrating that we failed to win either game, especially the Somerset one which was there for the taking.

“But I’ve been hitting the ball well and I think we just need a bit more belief to end the CB40 campaign on a high.”

While Flannigan’s role in the team is beginning to look settled, there will be changes elsewhere for this afternoon’s clash.

Skipper Gordon Drummond and all-rounder Jan Stander are absent due to work commitments.

Ewan Chalmers, Calvin Burnett and Safy Sharif are vying to fill the vacancies.
