Cricket: Essex in command thanks to James Foster

JAMES Foster hit the second century of Essex's innings to put them in a strong position against Durham in the LV County Championship Division One clash at Chester-le-Street.

Wicketkeeper Foster shared in a county-record partnership of 339 for the fifth wicket with Jaik Mickleburgh before the youngster, who had been 103 not out overnight, was bowled by Liam Plunkett (four for 112) for 174. The stand equalled Essex's record for any wicket. Two-time reigning champions Durham reached 83 for one in reply.

Nottinghamshire took control of Kent at Trent Bridge. Paul Franks (73) took the hosts from an overnight 396 for eight to 456 before Kent were bowled out for 200. Yorkshire closed on 320 for seven, a lead of 48 over Somerset at Headingley. Lancashire reached 84 for two in reply to Warwickshire's 254 at Old Trafford.
