The women’s fours, led by skip Margaret Letham - who has special status in the Team Scotland as its oldest member at 58 - never really got going against Jersey opponents proving a surprise package. They trailed throughout before eventually losing 15-7, and now face a do-or-die encounter with Australia, earlier beaten by Jersey, to make it out of their group.

Letham had no complaints about the outcome and the hugely experienced bowler dismissed any suggestion that the extra pressure of playing in front of a home crowd in Glasgow’s west end had affected their performance.

“Every game is a game to win no matter where you play,” she said. “”Playing in front of your own crowd people can look for you to play every bowl and every game the absolute best and that is not possible, but it is now all about tomorrow’s game.”

It was a different story for the men’s triples in the afternoon session. They ensured their place in the knock-out stages with 24-8 win over Namibia, despite a late rally for their opponents that made for their closest contest yet. The 100& record boasted by Darren Burnett’s men means their final round robin game against Wales will decide only who tops Section A.
