Commonwealth Games badminton: Gilmour into final

Kirsty Gilmour scored a sensational win over Malaysia’s Jing Yi Tee to make it into the gold medal match in the women’s singles at The Emirates Arena.

Gilmour won the first game 21-13 but it looked as though she would need to go to ad decider when Tee scorched into a 19-11 lead in the second. But gutsy Gilmour won the next ten points for an astonishing victory.

“It’s amazing, unbelievable,” was the Bothwell 20-year-old’s immediate reaction. “I almost thought about giving her the second game when I was so far behind but then I got one point, two points and just kept going.”

The Scottish Champion had lost to Tee in the quarter-final of the team match last Saturday. “But my head was in a much better place today,” she continued. “And the crowd was fantastic.”

In the other semi-final involving Scots, Imogen Bankier and Robert Blair lost 14-21 14-21 to England’s husband and wife pair, Chris and Gabby Adcock, in the mixed doubles.

It was a shame that they were on court first at 9am, an unearthly hour to expect a full house But they still have a medal chance – they face Malaysian’s Peng Soon Chan and Lai Pei Jing in the bronze medal match this evening.

“It’s hugely disappointing,” said Blair. “But we just weren’t good enough today. It was difficult for spectators to get here for a 9am start but now we have to focus on the next match. We want the medal.”

Gilmour will face Michelle Li in the final – the Canadian scored an upset 22-20 22-20 win over top seed P V Sindhu, from India, in the other semi-final. Gilmour is the No.2 seed and Li is No.3.

“We’ve never played but Michelle is obviously plying well to knock out Sindhu,” said Gilmour. “It’s going to be very tough tomorrow.”
