Clegg joy as her English guide wins Scottish gold

Libby Clegg and Mikail Huggins soak up the atmosphere in Glasgow

It was expected that guide Mikail Huggins – who acts as her eyes and speaks to her during the race – would not receive one as he is English.

But the pair – who have raced together for four years – arrived on the podium to find two medals after an apparent late change of plan by officials.

Clegg, 24, from Newcastleton in the Borders, was roared over the line with Huggins, 30, in the T11/12 100 metres by an ecstatic crowd, finishing in a world-leading 12.20 seconds.

The win made Clegg, who is visually-impaired, the first Scots athlete in 20 years to win track-and-field gold at the Games, following in the footsteps of Yvonne Murray who took the 10,000m in Victoria, in 1994.

Clegg said: “It was literally just before we came out into the stadium to go to the podium that we were told Mikail was going to get a medal, I was so happy.”

Huggins, from Birmingham, said that receiving a medal had been a special moment for him.

He said: “It’s a relationship that we’ve been building for four years. Practice makes perfect.

“I’m proud of her, and proud of us both. This is my life now, and I love what I do.”

Clegg, who was a silver medallist in the London 2012 Paralympics with Huggins, said that the crowd’s support during the race had been “overwhelming”.

She said: “It was just absolutely smashing.

“The crowd were so uplifting and supportive, it felt like they were just carrying us down the track. It was just incredible.

“It’s not sunk in yet. It’s been a whirlwind since we crossed the finish line, and we’ve not stopped yet.”
