City of Edinburgh take volleyball Club of the Year title

City of Edinburgh have been named Scottish volleyball’s Club of the Year after a landmark season for the South Queensferry outfit.

The women’s first team completed a league and cup double and while the men’s top team were pipped for their title by Kilmarnock Blaze, they went on to win the Scottish Cup.

City of Edinburgh II men just missed out on promotion to the top flight on the final day of the season but went on to win the Thistle Bowl, the first team outside of the top division to take the trophy.

But it is the depth of the club that led them to their award at the Scottish Volleyball Association’s agm in Perth.

The Under-19 and Under-16 boys’ teams won the Scottish Junior League titles and the Under-16 girls’ team won their respective junior title.

The club is reaping the rewards for setting up a volleyball academy in 2003 with former men’s first-team coach Ian Brownlee overseeing the development of young players.

“This caters for children under 11 upwards and allows them to develop their skills and knowledge of the game in a relaxed and fun atmosphere before progressing to competition,” said club chairman Hugh Murphy.
