Chris Doak books his place in qualifying final

Chris Doak stayed on course for a return to the European Tour as he came through the rain-delayed second stage of the qualifying school in Spain yesterday.

The reigning Scottish PGA champion, who played on the main circuit in 2009, fired a final round three-under 69 at Arcos Gardens in Jerez for a four-under total of 284.

Greenock pro Doak, 32, finished in a share of seventh, four shots behind English winner Steve Lewton, and comfortably secured one of the 23 qualifying spots on offer. Elgin's former Scottish Youths' champion Joel Hendry, needing a big finish to gatecrash the qualifying zone, could only manage a 74 and finished four strokes off the mark with a 293.

Doak joined Jack Doherty and Elliot and Lloyd Saltman as the Scottish successes from stage two. They will now head for PGA Catalunya in Girona this weekend for the six-round final where they will be joined in the battle for cards by former European Tour winners Alastair Forsyth, Marc Warren, Andrew Coltart and Raymond Russell.
