Child makes Bergen team

SCOTTISH 400 metres hurdles record-holder Eilidh Child, of Pitreavie AAC, has been included in the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the European Championships in Bergen later this month.

Nicola Sanders has been chosen ahead of Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu for the 400 metres, with the latter picked only for the relay.

Ohuruogu was outclassed by USA star Sanya Richards last season, managing only fifth at the World Championships, and she has failed to finish in the top three in two Diamond League outings this year.

In the men's 400 metres, Martyn Rooney was preferred to the in-form Michael Bingham, while world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis will not compete in the 19-20 June event at all.

The Sheffield athlete would have been in contention for the 100m hurdles and high jump but UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee believes her schedule is full enough already.

"She'll have done three events the weekend before in New York and that would be too much," he said.

Dwain Chambers has again been given the 100m spot and may yet captain the side.
