Changing room chat: Bookies step into awards breach

BOOKMAKERS rarely miss a trick when it comes to cashing in on a topical issue for a bit of free publicity.

Following the furore over the all-male shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, William Hill have gallantly stepped up to defend the honour of the nation’s top sportswomen by creating an alternative award to celebrate female achievement in sport over 2011.

The inaugural William Hill Sportswoman Of The Year Award will be decided on the 21 December, the winner of which will gain a VIP trip to the King George on Boxing Day as well as £1,000 Charity bet on the big race.

You can nominate your forgotten female on the bookies’ Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/williamhillsports). The shortlist will consist of the ten sportswomen with the most nominations. Votes for the winner can then be registered at http://news.williamhill.com or in coupons in Hill’s shops from early next week. “We feel that there has been a lot to celebrate in what has been a fantastic year for woman’s sport,” said a William Hill spokesman.
