Cap centurion Valentine decides to retire

SCOTLAND international Cheryl Valentine, a veteran of over 100 caps and a member of the gold medal team in the recent European Trophy, has decided it's now time to hang up her stick.

The 27-year-old physiotherapist gave her reasons: "I would like to study for a Masters in Perth, Australia, and in general enjoy being able to go on holiday a lot more often."

But there is speculation that being cut from Danny Kerry's Great Britain squad for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Beijing may have pushed Valentine over the edge.

What is not in doubt is that the talented Dundonian, who turns out for champions Bonagrass Grove, has made a huge impact in the national team over the past eight years as a regular in the midfield along with clubmate Vikki Bunce.

Keith Joss, Scotland head coach, paid her a fitting accolade, "Cheryl is one of the best passers from midfield that we've had in a while.

"We recognise her contribution to the team and she's finished on a high with the Europeans."
