Canoeing: David ready for day job

Edinburgh’s 2008 silver
medallist David Florence
begins his bid for Olympic gold in tomorrow’s C1 slalom heats at Lee Valley.

The Forth Canoe Club paddler tops the world rankings after showing superb World Cup form this summer, including double gold in Cardiff last month, but he warned: “It is very much an ‘on the day’ sport.

“I will prepare to the best of my ability and try to produce the best run I can. If I do that, then I know I can win a medal, whatever anyone else does.”

The 29-year-old’s first task is to qualify safely for Tuesday’s C1 semi-finals. Florence and Rich Hounslow begin their C2 doubles campaign on Monday.
