Canny Wilsons combine to shoot down Inch in cup

Longniddry Villa overpowered Inch Colts to win the South East Region under-15 Division 3 League Cup final with a 5-1 victory at New Dundas Park.

On a murky day in Bonnyrigg, namesakes Logan and Callum Wilson helped themselves to a brace of goals each, as Villa went four goals to the good before the hour mark.

The action started in frantic fashion as Villa began the brighter. Ally White produced a fantastic free kick which was palmed away by Colts' James Macgregor and out to safety.

Next to try his luck was Lewis Tulloch, who smashed in a strike from inside the Inch Colts box which clattered the bar and trickled out for a goal kick to keep the game goalless.

Colts' first opportunity fell to the feet of Ryan Laird, who bombed forward and fired a 30-yard strike five yards wide of Macgregor's post as they looked to take a foothold in the game.

Colts were almost in front after Bradley Ruthven was put clean through on goal, but he fired his shot straight into the hands of Macgregor. The first goal arrived soon after when Stewart misjudged a ball into the Colts box which bounced and looped over his head, falling perfectly for Logan Wilson to head home from two yards out and put Villa into the lead.

It was 2-0 almost immediately after the restart. Adam Forsyth played in a fantastic ball which fell to the feet of Callum Wilson, who slammed a tremendous half volley into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

After the break, Callum Wilson grabbed his second goal with a fine looping header from the right hand side of the box after a fine cross by Tulloch.

Villa were on fire, and should have made it 4-0 when Chris Baldie ran clean through on goal before poking a shot straight at Stewart who could only palm it towards the far corner of his goal. Colts defender Euan Wishart saved his blushes by sweeping the ball off the line and out for a throw in.

Longniddry did get their fourth goal when Logan Wilson collected ten yards inside his own half and hammered a speculative looping half volley over the head of Stewart to put the result beyond any doubt.

It wasn't looking like Inch Colts' day, and their misfortune was summed up with sub Liam Griffin's glaring miss which would have reduced the deficit to three goals. The striker collected the ball inside the Villa box and fired a half volley high and wide over the cross bar from five yards out.

Colts did get a consolation goal when Jake Brunton's half volley from the edge of the Longniddry box slammed high into the net to make the score 4-1. But the scoring was not finished, and Villa had the final say. Baldie rounded Stewart before cutting back on to his left and slotting his side's fifth goal into the corner of the net just before full time to make the final score 5-1 for Longniddry.Inch Colts manager David Eaglesham was proud of his team's effort but praised the opposition for the standard of their performance on the day.

He said: "We started well, Villa had a few shots at goal and then we had a couple of chances and never took them and I just felt Longniddry had the strength and willingness to win the game. They were more interested in getting to the ball first."

Longniddry Villa manager Eric Young also lauded his players' efforts and took time out to praise the Colts' style of play. He said: "It was a brave victory. The boys have been fantastic all season and they thoroughly deserved it. I'd also like to give a special mention to Inch Colts for playing the game in such a sporting manner."
