Canary Smith flying nest

STEVEN SMITH insists his time at Rangers will more than prepare him for life in the Coca-Cola Championship after sealing a move to Norwich.

The full-back will end his long association with the Scottish champions when he joins the Canaries as a free agent on 1 July after agreeing a two-year deal.

Smith's time at Rangers was marred by groin problems which resulted in a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But, fully fit and desperate for first-team football, Smith insists quality counts more than quantity in terms of the experience he can offer City.

"I grew up (at Rangers) and I've been there since I was ten years old," he said.

"I played in some big games – I played in the Champions League, big Old Firm games and games that can win you leagues. It's an experience.

"I might not have played a lot of games in a career but the games I've played in can stand me in good stead for playing in this league."

He added: "I know a lot of boys who have played in the league who have come from Scotland. It's a good league and it's very competitive so it's a big challenge."

Smith may have failed to oust Sasa Papac from the left-back berth at Rangers over the last couple of seasons but he is relishing the battle with City's Adam Drury for the jersey.

He said: "You need competition at every club and I'll be looking to give him that competition."
