Calum heads to the Braids seeking to be king of the Hill

SCOTTISH Boys' Championship semi-finalist Calum Hill heads a strong field for the Lothians Boys' Championship qualifying at The Braids tomorrow.

The Tantallon teenager will be determined to get the chance to show his match-play prowess again after giving a terrific account of himself at Dunbar in April.

But he'll probably have to play just as well to reach the same stage in an event that has been won over the years by players who've gone on to become leading lights in the Lothians.

Anthony Blaney, for instance, is certainly another player with great potential and he leads a sizeable Liberton contingent in tomorrow's 36 hole qualifier.

The field also includes two players who qualified for the recent men's Lothians Championship at Broomieknowe. Craigielaw's Willem Kerr was left kicking himself after he let former winner Mark Timmins, the Lothians captain, off the hook in the first round. And Royal Musselburgh's Stuart Blair also caught the eye as he won two matches before he, too, lost to Timmins.

Bathgate's Louis Gaughan is another who'll be heading up The Braids with his sights set on the title and so, too, will Lee Morgan (Newbattle), Ewen Donaldson (Craigielaw), Ross Brydon (Bruntsfield Links) and Euan Bowden (Glen), among others.

Another genuine contender is surely rising West Linton star Fraser Thain, who is being joined in the qualifying line-up by his younger brother Ruari. Craigielaw's Simon Fairburn claimed the title for the past two years but is now too old so a new name will definitely be going on the trophy after Friday's final.
