Caldo happy to farm out young talent at Hibs

HIBS boss Colin Calderwood is to continue farming out some of the club's brightest young talent in a bid to fast-track them into his Easter Road squad.

Calderwood has a clutch of youngsters on loan at the moment, among them Ewan Moyes and Callum Booth starring in Brechin City's 5-0 win over Peterhead at the weekend, a result which sent the Angus club back to the top of the Second Division.

Midfielder Scott Taggart is enjoying a spell with Ayr United while Kurtis Byrne has been among the goals with East Fife, the Irish kid making a second half appearance as a substitute to help John Robertson's side crush Stenhousemuir 6-0.

Kevin McCann is also out on loan with Inverness Caledonian Thistle as he seeks to rebuild his career following two years of injuries and like the others his situation will be assessed by Calderwood during next month's transfer window.

Hibs have used the loan system to good effect over the years with current stars such as Derek Riordan and Ian Murray learning their trade in the lower leagues before returning to Easter Road to make a name for themselves.

And it is a road Calderwood intends to use, particularly as the scrapping of the SPL reserve league - a move opposed by Hibs - has left up-and-coming youngsters facing a lack of competitive action.

Calderwood said: "It's very useful for younger players to end their week with a competitive game and match action.

"It's an avenue we must use and probably more and more because we don't have a reserve league.

"It's a very useful way of progressing young players and I've done it at the majority of the clubs I've been at."
