Broxburn come up against a team on fire

After thrashing Armadale 6-1 in the semi final the day before, West Calder took their goal tally to 12 in just two days. Russell Little was the hero, putting three past Broxburn goalkeeper Lewis Whitehead.

Despite the 6-2 scoreline, Broxburn were still able to produce a number of moments of high-quality football.

A mis-hit cross, after six minutes, resulted in the opening goal for West Calder. Right midfielder Innes MacKenzie's ball floated over Whitehead into the far left corner of the net.

Seven minutes later, Little scored his first goal of the match in spectacular fashion. From 30 yards out he launched the ball high into the goal.

Broxburn pulled a goal back after 17 minutes after Euan Pryde was fouled on the left side of the penalty area. Marcus Miller stepped up to place his penalty to the right of goalkeeper Andrew Massie.

On the verge of half time, Broxburn levelled the score at 2-2. Leon Gopal flicked Cameron Tully's corner into the path of Euan Pryde who had an easy finish from inside the six-yard box.

Three minutes into the second half, however, West Calder retook the lead. A long ball was flicked on by Connor Williamson to Little, who rifled his shot into the bottom left corner from 15 yards out.

Little turned provider for West Calder's fourth goal, picking up a through ball before crossing low across the six yard box, where MacKenzie scored his second goal with a simple tap-in.

A few minutes later, Little completed his hat trick. Hesitation from Broxburn central defender Murray Geddes allowed Little through on goal and his lofted shot found the top right corner.

In the closing stages, a headed clearance from Roy Eadie fell to Williamson, who shot powerfully into the bottom of the net to complete the scoring for West Calder.

Broxburn Academy coach, Michael Howley, felt that both teams contributed to an exciting match. He said: "I thought some of the football was excellent. Both teams had quality and there were definitely some star performances in both teams. I'm amazed West Calder played their semi-final the day before. It's a testament to their fitness and their skill.

"The West Calder boys deserve it but we put up a good fight. Some of the football was tremendous. A few of these boys will have some good futures in the game. I'm proud of the boys for getting this far." West Calder High School coach, Carrie McSporran, was delighted to bounce back from missing out on the league title. She said, "The boys played really well. We played the semi-final last night, so they came into the game quite tired. They played brilliantly.They gave 100 per cent effort.

"We were disappointed with the league loss. We lost to Linlithgow in a play-off but this definitely makes up for it though."
