Josh Taylor, Martin Compston, Travis and Twin Atlantic to head up BBC Scotland's Hogmanay coverage

New Scottish boxing hero Josh Taylor is to star in BBC Scotland’s Hogmanay coverage as part of a revamped format will also feature the leading actors Martin Compston, James Cosmo and Mark Bonnar in conversation.

East Lothian-born boxing star Josh Taylor will be joined by actor Martin Compston and the bands Twin Atlantic and Travis on BBC Scotland on Hogmanay.

The rock bands Twin Atlantic and Travis are among the star guests unveiled by the broadcaster for an expanded Hogmanay line-up which will be shown across BBC One and the broadcaster’s new dedicated Scottish channel.

Still Game star Jane McCarry, the Inverness trad band Elephant Sessions and Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis will also be appearing in the new-look Hogmanay festivities.

Two separate shows will be fronted by comic Susan Calman, who has taken take over from BBC Scotland’s long-time host Jackie Bird after 20 years.

Much of the content in the two programmes, which will go out at 9pm on the new BBC Scotland channel and 11.30pm on BBC One, will have been pre-recorded in advance under a shake-up of this year’s festive programming, however comic Des Clarke and sports presenter Amy Irons will be presenting live segments.

Taylor will appear on the early show with Rachel Corsie, captain of Scotland’s women’s football team, World Para-Athletics gold medalist Maria Lyle European 1500 metres champion Laura Muir, as well as Travis and Twin Atlantic.

The two bands will also appear in the late show, along with Line of Duty star Compston and Jane McCarry, who is best known as Isa in Still Game.

The show will feature live coverage of Edinburgh’s midnight fireworks and the famous fireball festivities in Stonehaven, where Radio Scotland will stage a two-hour Hogmanay special.

The BBC has already revealed plans for its UK-wide festive programming, which will including a Christmas Day special of Call the Midwife filmed in the Outer Hebrides, a one-off festive return for Gavin and Stacey, the launch of a new series of Doctor Who on New Year’s Day, and a new three-part adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol, starring Guy Pearce and Andy Serkis.

Other highlights of BBC’s Hogmanay line-up include the return of the hit Scottish football comedy sketch show Only An Excuse, which will see Still Game favourite Mark Cox and Scot Squad star Louise McCarthy appear alongside regular frontman Jonathan Watson and two of his Two Doors Down co-stars, Alex Norton and Joy McAvoy.

BBC Scotland will be screening a home-town gig by rising comedy star Jim Smith, better known as “Farmer Jim,” which was filmed in his native Perthshire, while Scot Squad star Jack Docherty will be fronting a BBC One documentary recalling some of the nation’s best-known advertising campaigns and slogans.

Other shows confirmed in BBC Scotland’s festive line-up include a special festive edition of the hit documentary series Inside Central Station, a screening of a live performance of Scottish Ballet’s new production of The Snow Queen filmed live at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh and highlights from The Boaty Weekender, a four-day floating festival staged by the Scottish indie band Belle and Sebastian on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean this year.

BBC Scotland director Donalda MacKinnon said: “Throughout the festivities there’ll be something for everyone with this terrific seasonal selection from our programme makers.

"Audiences join us in big numbers for our Hogmanay celebrations and we’re looking forward to welcoming them again as we round off the year in style with a cocktail of dance, music and entertainment.”

Calman was unveiled last month as the new face of BBC Scotland's newly-extended Hogmanay coverage.

She said at the time: "Hogmanay is such an important occasion across the country and I’m delighted to be on hand to help usher in the New Year.

"It’s going to be a fun night packed with great comedy, entertainment and music. I always like to get a party started and hope everyone will join me to welcome in 2020 in spectacular fashion."
