Boxing: Usher Hall promises feast of boxing for Capital fans

Holyrood club boss Bradley Welsh launches the first of several top amateur boxing events at the Usher Hall tomorrow evening.

An Edinburgh Select will take on an Edinburgh universities team – featuring boxers from Edinburgh, Napier, Queen Margaret and Heriot-Watt – in a 15-bout bill starting at 7pm.

“This show is the first of several exciting clashes which will go ahead at the Usher Hall in the coming months. On May 25, an Edinburgh team will take on Manchester boxers on May 25 followed by an Edinburgh v Glasgow show in July,’’ said Welsh.

Among several intriguing match-ups on tomorrow’s bill is that featuring Merchiston Castle lightweight James McPherson of the Lochend club, who’ll be cheered on by an army of his fellow pupils against Edinburgh Uni’s Rob Craig.

Holyrood welterweight Andy Thorburn will go head-to-head with Edinburgh Uni boxing team captain Calum Johnstone, while Holyrood middleweight Kevin Ballantyne takes on Heriot-Watt’s former British champion Mark Docherty.

East Lothian boxers will also box for the Edinburgh team including featherweight Martin Buist, who faces Hamish Connell while Leith Victoria middleweight Colin Currie will clash with Queen Margaret University’s Craig Nelson.

Admission will be £10 on the door tomorrow evening.
