Boxing: Paulin relying on woman’s touch to prepare for final

Meadowbank’s Eastern district lightweight champion Lewis Paulin has adopted a novel way of preparing for his bid to add the Scottish 60kg Intermediate crown to his boxing honours roll.

Paulin has been sparring with his female counterpart and clubmate, Katy Atkin, ahead of his clash with Glasgow Noble Art club rival Matt Campbell at the Pivot Centre, Moodiesburn on Sunday.

And, according to Meadowbank coach Mark Geraghty there is no question of these sessions being a gimmick.

“Katy Atkin is the Scottish Women’s Senior Scottish 60kg champion in her own right and she is a tough operator inside as Lewis himself would confirm,” insisted Geraghty. “She is making sure that Paulin is razor-sharp for his final.”

Sunday’s fight was originally set to go ahead two weeks ago in Motherwell; however, as Paulin had already fought twice to reach the final at Ravenscraig, Amateur Boxing Scotland rules prohibited the Capital fighter from entering a third bout in the same day.

Geraghty added: “Lewis has entered the Intermediate championships simply to keep sharp for his main ambition – winning a Scottish Senior title next month at Meadowbank.”
