Boxing: Lochend annual show sure to be an explosive encounter

Lochend Amateur Boxing Club host their annual club show tonight with head coach Terry McCormack predicting quite a storm with several first-class boxers due to enter the ring.

The home boys will be looking to register victories in each of their respective bouts but McCormack has lined up some tough competition.

He said: “We’ve got British champion Lewis Benson topping the bill and he’s up against Chris Given from Heriot-Watt so that will be a cracking fight. We’ve also got Tommy Philbin, a Scottish internationalist, who has had to move up a division, fighting against Emmanuel Ahonsi from Aberdeen who is a big strong boy, so it’s packed with top international fights.

“They are all 50/50 matches so we’ve brought in some top boys to fight our guys. ”

With 11 fights scheduled to take place, the 200 boxing enthusiasts expected to attend will see some of the country’s finest amateurs. However, the show also provides an opportunity for those who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes at the club to enjoy the occasion.

McCormack added: “This is our main show of the year and on the night there are awards for the best youth and senior boxer, so it’s a big event for the club. We’ve got an after-party as well so it’s a bit of a celebration after a long year of hard work.”

Lochend’s Olympic star Josh Taylor will not be competing as he is scheduled to box for Great Britain in the World Series
Boxing League next month.
