Boxing: Josh Taylor excels as Brits revel in gold rush

SCOTLAND’S Josh Taylor triumphed as British boxers dominated the final day at the London International Invitational, winning five gold medals and a bronze from six finals at the Olympic test event.

Taylor scored a 13-0 win over Anthony Yigit of Sweden and, along with England’s Martin Ward and Sean McGoldrick from Wales, ensured all three home nations went home with gold.

Repton lightweight Ward produced a classy 10-5 victory over Eugen Burhard of Germany and bantamweight McGoldrick - gold medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games - beat Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand 14-10. GB’s six-medal haul was completed by Wales’ Fred Evans, who was third in the welterweight category.

Success was also achieved by the women in the morning session, as Liverpool’s Natasha Jonas and Hartlepool’s Savannah Marshall scored convincing victories over world number two Cheng Dong of China and Dariga Shakimova of Kazhakstan respectively. It was Marshall’s first gold at the Olympic middleweight (75kg) category after she moved up from welterweight (69kg) at the start of 2011.
