Boxing: Fairgrieve’s thunder rings loud

SUPER-HEAVYWEIGHT Gary Fairgrieve’s performance in front of a capacity crowd at the East Lothian winter show was today hailed by club official Calum Colquhoun.

Fairgrieve fired a devastating first-round knockout against Hillpark opponent William McNally at Haddington Corn Exchange and Colquhoun enthused: “Fairgrieve whacked McNally with a thunderous right hand in round one, the referee gave him an eight count then McNally’s corner skied the towel into the ring in surrender – it was awesome!’’

East Lothian welterweight Ian Trotter enjoyed a points win over Chirnside’s Steve Williams which brought him the Best Home Boxer award, and the host club’s welterweight Alan Cockburn beat Craigmillar’s Usman Ahmed.

East Lothian’s light-flyweight Cameron McFayden beat Craigmillar’s Yalcin Genk, while Leith Victoria welterweight Sean Eng outscored Motherwell’s Edward Donoghue.

Despite losing a close verdict to East Lothian’s Keith Colgan, Leith Victoria welterweight Gregor Korsak was named as Best Boxer on the Bill for taking Colgan down to the wire after four tough rounds. Leith Vics light-welterweight Sean White responded to be giving a much tougher substitute opponent at short notice when multi-titled Scottish internationalist Bryce Stewart from Stirlingshire beat him by one point.
