Boxing: Taylor wins promotion to GB squad

Lochend lightweight Josh Taylor will box for Great Britain in the European amateur championships in Ankara, Turkey.

Taylor had been due to box for Scotland but will now step up to the GB squad in the event which runs from June 16-26.

His Lochend coach Terry McCormack confirmed: "It's huge boost for Josh's ambition to box in the 2012 Olympic Games. Great Britain coach Robert McCracken has not only noted Josh's great gold medal-winning performance in Belgrade recently but he has told Taylor he will be representing Great Britain and not just Scotland.''

Meanwhile, Lochend's comeback middleweight star, Tommy Philbin, has picked up the gauntlet after Alloa's Scottish 75kg champion, Darren Reid, challenged the Lochend boxer, who beat Reid on points in last month's Leith Victoria club show, to a rematch.

The pair will clash at Alloa Town Hall on an Alloa ABC show. Philbin will face the Renfrewshire club's Scottish welterweight champion and British team boxer Aston Brown at Paisley Town Hall the following Friday.
