Boxing: Gary McMillan is king of ring in fine show

Edinburgh's British Masters welterweight champion, Gary McMillan stopped Winchester opponent Martyn King with a blistering volley of head and body shots in Round seven at Glasgow's Thistle Hotel last night - and then sent a "Your next" warning to Paisly fellow southpaw and ex British 10st 7lbs champion Kevin McIntyre.

McMillan's call was all the more pertinent considering McIntyre was the man who was supposed to clash with McMillan on promoter Alex Morrison's show before calling off with a cold.

McMillan was understandably jubilant after his fine victory and said: "Despite being ring rusty after six months without a fight and conceding King half a stone in weight I knew I had his number once I dropped him in the fourth round with body shots for a count.

"And while I found his two inch height advantage and longer reach awkward at first once I put my body shot combinations together then I wasn't at all surprised that King buckled in the 7th round from more body shots.

"However I was disappointed that McIntyre was not at ringside to see what I plan for him once we clash.

"I want that fight to be sooner rather later as McIntyre was mouthing off at me earlier this week, knowing he didn't have to fight me.

"I also aim to be much busier in the ring over summer as six months is too long without action in the ring."

It wasn't just McMillan who was waxing lyrical about his performance - his promotor Terry McCormack was just as effusive on the boxer's performance.

"Considering McMlllan's long lay off and the fact that King came to fight, I'm really pleased with Gary's win tonight, even though I feel that if the rounds had been over three instead of two minutes each, McMillan would have stopped Martyn King much earlier than the seventh round."
