Bowls: Scots lose U25 title on final day of high drama

Scotland lost their Under 25 Junior Home International series title at Nottingham yesterday amid dramatic scenes in their concluding match against England.

The previous day they got off to a wonder start when they whitewashed Ireland 110-52, but they were brought back to earth with a bang when they were pipped by Wales 70-67.

England had won both their matches convincingly against Wales and Ireland, leaving the Scots requiring a seven-shot victory to retain the title.

In a closely-contested match, the scoreline was tied at 64-64 with only a few ends to play across the board when an elderly spectator suffered a heart attack. Paramedics attended to the patient and the game was called to a halt.

However, as is their right, two of the English rinks refused to leave the green as they were holding shots and this attitude infuriated the Scots. On resumption, England went on to win the match 76-72 and regain the title they last held two years ago, leaving the Scots in third place behind Wales.

Team captain Cameron Greer’s team of Kevin Wallace, Jamie Reid – who substituted for Jamie Aitken – and Callum Taggart finished the Series as the top rink with a 100 per cent record.
