Bowls: Scots fall just short of clean sweep in finals

Scotland wound up their WIBC World Indoor Championship campaign at Auchinleck yesterday, winning two of the three titles on offer.

Teviotdale's Julie Forrest brought her season to a glittering climax. She won the national singles title in December, added the British title last month and yesterday regained the world crown she last held in 2004. In the final against Ireland's Muriel Wilkinson, the Borders bowler cruised to a 10-1, 11-2 victory.

In the mixed pairs final, Blantyre's Margaret Letham retained the title she won at Swansea last year, partnering Stewart Anderson from the host club.

They lost the first set to Carol Ashby and David Gourlay, but stormed back to take the second set 12-2 and then the title, winning on the last end of the tie-break 2-1.

However, the Scots failed to make it three out of three as newly-crowned British champion Mike Stepney from Elgin went down to England's Graham Smith 8-2, 8-4.
