Bowls: Midlothian lifted by U-25s' dramatic Scottish Cup win

There is euphoria in the Midlothian camp after the present crop of budding stars in the County's Under-25 brigade captured the Scottish League Cup with a dramatic win over Dunbartonshire in the final at Cambusbarron, Stirling.

Midlothian were against the collar most of the way and entering the last of the 21-ends across the six rinks they trailed 107-103 but produced a spectacular grandstand finish of 13-4 to snatch the trophy honours with a 116-111 victory.

"It was heart-thumping stuff and great unfolding drama with Daniel McDougall counting a 4, Kevin McDougall a 3, Robert Trench a 2, and Scott Runciman a 3, to make 12 but Stuart Wyllie lost a 4," described team manager Drew Pearson.

"That crossed us into a 4 shot lead but Andy Buerle faced 5 against on the mat with his final bowl and under all that pressure the lad killed the lot with a magnificent draw on top of the jack for a title winning single," he added.

It was a fantastic moment for all in the Midlothian camp but for Buerle in particular as he found himself elevated from villain to hero role as in company with Neil Layt, Nial Keith and Neil Gibson they lost their own game, 21-8.

Midlothian did have three other losing rinks with Wyllie going down 20-19; Kevin McDougall 20-16, and Runciman 26-20. But Trench inspired Neil Linton, Jamie Bathgate and Calum Crawford to a 31-12 triumph that was supported by a 22-12 success for Craig More, Andrew Kelly and Daniel McDougall.
