Bowls: It’s Rob joy for Slateford

Slateford was at his sharpest to beat John Urquhart of Ardmillan 21-14 in last night’s quarter-finals of the Edinburgh Top Ten bowls event.

Slateford booked their place in the semi-finals with an 8-0 victory that saw Marshall’s home leg success supported by an 18-12 win for their rink of Louis Beaton, Rab Stewart, John Ramsay and Scott Brunton, against Michael Nolan’s skip.

The away leg at Ardmillan
saw Dougie Martin and 
Gordon Ramsay zip from 0-2 to 12-2 then triumph 19-11, while the Triple of Ronnie Ramsay, Graham McAdam and Andrew Ramsay won 26-6.

Colinton scored a 6-2 win over Goldenacre but lived a bit dangerously, with David Fisher losing 21-10 to a big performance from former national champion Billy Mellors in the Singles.

Mellors was on home territory and the prospects looked good for Goldenacre when Malcolm Thomson led 14-9 in the Fours. Three ends later, however, they lost a mighty 5 that saw them slip to a costly 20-16 defeat from Gary MacDonald.

Colinton ruled at home with Brian Davies and Cammy Cairns winning the Pairs 19-10,and the Triple of Phil Watson, Ross Byers and John Fisher triumphed 18-12.

Halley Cockburn produced a great away performance for Parkside to beat Richard Tough of Carrick Knowe 21-13 in the Singles, but the home rink, skipped by Johnny Priestley, beat Alex Hurry 19-10 in the Fours. Carrick Knowe survived with a shot-margin win after Kevin Tennant and Colin Mitchell powered to a 23-13 away victory in the Pairs, to counter the 13-12 defeat of Graeme Pringle, Stephen Pringle and James Hogg in the Triples.

Holders Craigentinny dealt an 8-0 exit to Pilrig.
