Bowls: 'Hungry bears' Bainfield on prowl in East Lothian

IT WILL take something of a bowling miracle for relegation-zoned Bainfield to get off the mark against a star-studded East Lothian team when the clubs clash in the B section of the indoor bowls Premier League at Tranent tomorrow.

"We are entering the lion's den and are candidates for being mauled. However, our spirits remain high and we will be trying like hungry bears to snatch the points," said Bainfield team manager John Bell.

Bell has made four changes with Alan Trotter and Gary Robertson stood down and stalwart figures Stevie McLeod and Brian Stoddart unavailable.

Graham Pringle, Scott Patterson and teenager Stephen Pringle are recalled and the manager hands a debut to ex-East Fife player Martyn Dickson.

Dickson and Patterson form a new front-end for Jamie Gracie who has former cap Alan Brown restored to third while team captain Craig Moss and Graham Pringle form a new front-two for Chris Wilson and Paul O'Donnell.

Gavin Smith skips Chris Downie, Stephen Pringle and Colin Hutchison while Craig Paterson, Graeme McIntosh and Jamie Aitken form the front-three for Robert Marshall.

East Lothian field the same team that won convincingly at West Lothian last weekend, with team captain Mal Higgenbotham still on the sidelines.

In Division 1B, Portobello have home carpet advantage over Tweedbank but the visitors have shown winning form at Balbardie and Abbeyview. Robert Sloan and Gordon Bold are being replaced by returning stars Ian Fleming and Craig McCall.

• BAINFIELD continue to go great guns in the East B section of the Seniors Scottish League Cup and this week's commanding 90-42 win over West Lothian at Livingston keeps them top with two points more than East Lothian after seven games.

Wins on all four rinks - skipped by Adam Brock, Alan Craig, Mike Marshall and Neil Butters - made it an exciting team performance.

Bainfield ladies have home advantage tomorrow in their top-of-the-table clash with East Lothian in Division 1C of the Scottish League Cup and make one change with Christine Laurenson coming in for Sheila Grigor. They beat Portobello 74-66 in their latest match.
