Bowls: Glorious Gourlay advances but Burnett bows out in Perth

It was another day of contrasting fortunes in the Co-operative Funeralcare Scottish International Open in Perth, with David Gourlay turning in a top-quality display to book his berth in the quarter-finals, whilst Darren Burnett was extremely frustrated at losing his second-round match to qualifier Rob Paxton from Exeter.

Gourlay progressed at the expense of St Andrews-born Andy Thomson, 55, who now lives in London 10-6, 12-5 whilst Burnett bowed out 10-4, 8-6.

No.6 seed Simon Skelton and sponsors wild card Ian Bond also made it through to the quarter-finals. Skelton edged out Welshman John Price 6-6, 7-5 while Bond beat Aussie Lee Schraner to win 9-5, 9-5. Meanwhile, in the World Champion of Champoins singles in Hong Kong, Jonathan Ross opened up a two-point lead at the top of the men’s table ahead of England, Canada and Spain in the chasing pack.
