Bowls: Expectations are high as Carrick Knowe return home

Carrick KNOWE’S defence of the Scotmid Water of Leith 1st Sixteen’s bowls League title got off to a poor start with a 2½-2½ draw at home to Balerno but expectations are high for a better result at Beechwood tonight.

Beechwood will be no gimmie on their home green but Carrick Knowe have four skips of outstanding ability in Colin Mitchell, Darren Hush, Richard Tough and James Hogg.

The team is unchanged from the opening game and Mitchell skips Kevin Tennant, Robert Mitchell and John Priestley while Andy Beath, Stephen Pringle and Ian McKenna form the front three for Hush.

Tough has Chris Crawford, Colin Tough and Craig Aitken in front of him while Hogg skips Rab Hush, John Mitchell and Graham Pringle. These WoL league games will also provide a good test for Graham Pringle, Craig Aitken, Richard Tough and James Hogg, who as reigning Scottish champions, will challenge for the British Isles Fours title next month.

Bainfield will follow up their opening 4-1 home win over Sighthill with a visit to Colinton tonight. Slateford defeated Gorgie Mills 4-1 at home in their opening fixture and are away to Sighthill.

Balerno have home advantage for their derby clash against a Currie team that opened with a 3-2 home win over Beechwood while Gorgie Mills entertain a Juniper Green team which beat Colinton 4-1 in their opening fixture.

Meanwhile, opening night in Division 3 of the Alpha Trophies sponsored Edinburgh Bowling League finds Summerside determined to bounce straight back up to Division 2.

David Poole has joined from Pilrig and teenager Kerr McKail from Craigentinny and they join forces with former Dudley star and Tait Trophy champion Peter Miller and ex Tanfield/Pilrig ace Keith Taylor.

London Road Foundry are tonight’s visitors.

Northern are a team that probably needs a strong home record to survive in Division 1 and tonight’s opening test is a tough one in the shape of Parkside. The home skips are George Prentice, Mike Burns, Jamie Reid, and former Tait Trophy champion Davy Scott.

n BOWLS Scotland has announced Gordon Logan of Kirkliston as its successor to George Sneddon (Broxburn) as Manager of the Gents International Team.
