Bowls: David Gourlay foils record bid by Marshall

THERE will be no record-extending sixth world indoor singles title for Alex Marshall.

Just 24 hours after winning the pairs title for the third time in a row he was brought back to earth with a bump by No 4 seed David Gourlay last night.

Playing for a place in the quarter finals on Friday, Gourlay, the head coach for Bowls Scotland, roared home 9-4, 12-1. Marshall admitted: “David totally outbowled me. Some days results got for you and sometimes they don’t”.

Meanwhile, Troon’s Paul Foster lifted his second world title in two days, relegating fellow Scot Darren Burnett from Arbroath to the runners-up spot for the second successive day at the Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk.

Foster teamed up with Laura Thomas from Wales to take the World Matchplay Mixed Pairs title, bringing his tally of world titles to ten, by defeating Karen Murphy and Burnett 10-6.

“Laura was nervous during the opening ends but once she settled she got the better of Karen and played the way she’s played for me throughout the tournament,” said Foster.
