The Boss brings his girls to tears

EMOTIONS at the BDO World Dart Championships came to a sharp point the other night, when the daughters of Scotland's Ross 'The Boss' Montgomery were left in floods of tears when their dad lost after missing nine darts to win his first-round match.

Sixth-seed Montgomery, 47, seemed to have victory in the bag against Yorkshireman Garry Thompson in the final set of their best-of-five first-round tie, but could not nail down a winning double despite three separate visits to the oche. Ross' daughters Alisha and Gemma, who seconds before had been beaming with pride, were left crestfallen as Thompson somehow clawed his way back and beat their dad – a former American Football player with the Glasgow Diamonds.

The BBC cameraman at the Lakeside in Frimley Green kept his emotions and did his job, homing in on a sporting tearjerker which would have left a lump in the throat of most viewers.

At least The Boss never suffered as badly as Australia's Anthony Fleet, who struggled so badly with nerves that he dropped his darts and nearly keeled over during his first leg in a 3-0 defeat to Martin 'Wolfie' Adams.

Fleet, from Canberra, admitted: "I have waited 20 years to get here and I have embarrassed myself."
