Boroughmuir great Fraser Henderson dies at 75

Fraser Henderson – a past president and captain of Boroughmuir – has passed away aged 75.

He played for the Meggetland club between 1955 and 1965, firstly as an openside flanker and latterly at hooker while he was also keen on sevens.

That period was broken up by national service for a while, but he was captain from 1959-61. He then did some coaching at the club and was always involved in goings on until he was made president in season 1985-86. That year was a very good one for the first XV as, under the captaincy of Scotland cap Norrie Rowan and the coaching of Bill Watson, they won 23 matches out of 31 and finished fourth in the championship. Subsequently he was made an honorary president of the club.

Henderson’s professional life was based around education and at one time he was deputy director of education for the City of Edinburgh Council.

Harry Pincott, the former Scotsman sports journalist, was a team-mate of Henderson’s and said: “He was an aggressive player on the pitch and as a leader he was a very good motivator. The team enjoyed playing under his captaincy.”

Henderson’s son Grant also played for Boroughmuir.
