Boroughmuir 22-15 Heriot’s: Guedroudj gives ’Muir cup belief

Boroughmuir’s two-try hero Redha Guedroudj hailed the belief in the squad at the moment after they defeated Heriot’s to claim the RBS Edinburgh Regional Cup on Saturday.

Guedroudj is one of a number of fringe players who have stepped into the ’Muir first team in recent weeks and performed impressively as they have recorded four wins out of four. This 22-15 victory was a cracking advert for club rugby and leaves Boroughmuir just one step away from Murrayfield with a national semi-final to come against Ayr on 31 March.

Guedroudj, who has tasted success at the national stadium with Aberdeen University in the Plate in 2008 and 2009, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have beaten Heriot’s and kept up our good recent run.

“Since the new year a number of players such as myself have managed to force our way into the first XV squad and there is real competition for places and a belief that we can go out and win every time we take to the field. We know the trip to Ayr later in the month will be tricky, but we beat them in the league last week, and with Murrayfield just a step away it is a big incentive for us all.”

Heriot’s actually started brightly on Saturday, but after 26 minutes ’Muir had built up a 10-0 lead, Ally Warnock converting a Guedroudj try and adding a penalty.

By the break it was 17-10 after three tries in ten minutes. The two unconverted ones for Heriot’s came from second-row Ruairidh Wilson and scrum-half Graham Wilson with No 8 Iain Moody scoring a converted effort for ’Muir.

A third try of the day from ’Muir in the 68th minute, again from the lively Guedroudj, looked to have sealed the win before a late try by Heriot’s No 8 Jason Hill set up a frantic finale.

For the last few minutes Heriot’s gave their all, but could not get the converted try they needed to level things up and take the match to extra-time, and the feel-good factor running through the Meggetland-based club continued.
