Blow for Celtic and Scotland as Scott Brown is sidelined for six weeks

Celtic and Scotland midfielder Scott Brown has been ruled out for at least six weeks with a metatarsal injury, the club have announced.

Brown was forced to withdraw from Craig Levein's squad ahead of last night's Euro 2012 qualifier against the Czech Republic in Prague after a decision was taken not to risk aggravating what was described as an ankle problem.

It was assumed the former Hibernian player would return to the Scotland camp today to be assessed ahead of next Tuesday's encounter with Spain at Hampden.

However, Celtic's medical staff have investigated the problem and a statement on the club's website read: "Following scans it has been found that Scott has suffered a stress reaction in the third metatarsal on his right foot. Investigations are ongoing but it is likely that Scott will, unfortunately, be out for a period of six weeks.

"However, this could potentially be longer, though the club will only know after Scott sees a specialist next Tuesday."

Meanwhile, Rangers keeper Allan McGregor will learn today if he has been found guilty and punished by the Scottish Football Association for an incident which took place at Aberdeen nearly two weeks ago.

McGregor shrugged off an ongoing leg injury to keep goal for Scotland last night, but could return to Glasgow to discover he is facing a ban.

The 28-year-old is subject to an investigation for allegedly aiming a kick at Dons striker Chris Maguire during the 3-2 win at Pittodrie. Rangers' official website claimed the SFA's review panel has already made a decision, with the club and McGregor awaiting recorded delivery letters which will arrive today.

An SFA staff member was quoted as saying: "A decision has been made and letters have been sent to both Rangers and Allan McGregor by recorded delivery."

It was the SFA's new chief executive, Stewart Regan, who convened the video review panel to look at the incident from the match.

The panel is made up of three men - one ex-referee, one ex-manager and one former player and is chaired by Sandy Stables of the Aberdeenshire and District FA.
