Bitter taste for Matt Scott, but he is hungry for more big-time action

MATT Scott wore the same demoralised expression of his Edinburgh team-mates and admitted they were cursing their own errors after Saturday’s semi-final defeat, but the 21-year-old quickly revealed a clear belief that the club and Scottish rugby will build success on the back of this season’s promise.

“It has been a massive confidence boost,” said the centre, who started the season as an academy talent playing with Currie and made his Scotland debut against Ireland in the same Aviva Stadium where he experienced his first Heineken Cup semi-final.

“When you start to look ahead with this group of players, and the new additions we’re getting next year, you do feel we’re in a really good place at the moment.

”A lot of young guys like me will learn massively from this and I think the future is definitely looking bright for us, so that’s a positive to take out of the weekend and the cup run.

“The overriding emotion after the game was huge disappointment and I was so frustrated, but it just makes you want to get another shot at it as soon as possible. So I can’t wait for the next campaign to start because I’ve loved every minute of this Heineken Cup.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate coming in in such an historic year, especially when you’ve got guys who’ve been here for over a decade and this is the first time that they’ve played in a semi-final. So personally I feel very lucky but I’m hungry for more.

Glasgow have exciting young players coming up as well and we know that we can get an opportunity at international level, and then who knows? We could do something special.”

There is one benefit to missing out on the Heineken Cup Final for Scott, as his final law degree exams are in the week leading up to the Twickenham affair.

“At least the pressure of these big games is taken away now,” he added. “We have one league game left but I’ll be straight into the books this week.

“It has been hanging over me. I’m just the same as any other student – I’m nervous about exams and I don’t want to do badly in them – so it has been in the back of my mind and I’ve been worried about going to the library and not getting much done because I’m absolutely knackered from training. Maybe now I’ll have a bit of free time with the end of the season to prepare for the exams.”
