Alex MacQueen, a primary seven teacher, runs the basketball club at the school and she oversees the Monday and Tuesday out of hours training.

“I came to the school five years ago and basketball had already started,” she explained. “Now we have two junior and two senior teams. We won the Under-12 girls’ league last session and the boys were third. Our girls won the 2014 Highland and Islands Championship and also the 2015 Gold Cup.

“This session, we have a very promising group of juniors (Under-10s) and there have been a number of Hilton pupils that have gone on to represent Highland and Scotland schools.

“Basketball is very fashionable in the Inverness area. John Kerray (Highlands and Island Regional Development Officer) is very good at organising everything and he is also great at keeping the pupils going as they get older.”

This session, the Hilton junior teams are made up of 14 players – eight boys and six girls. They play in four-a-side, mixed gender teams.

The players are Susan Walker, Jenna Macpherson, Evie Letters, Emma MacRae, Kirsty Morrison, Aimee Ironside, Charlie MacRae, Euan Daun, Lewis Mackie, Nathan Suanders, James Silvey, Kenzie Cruikshank, Scott Moir and Aden Cuming. Ms MacQueen is delighted with their progress – and reckons that several have great potential for the future.
