Basketball: Scots coach gets chance to cast his eye over Kings

Recently-appointed
Scotland basketball team coach, Iain Maclean, who has taken the reins for a second time, will get a chance to assess the merits of the current Edinburgh Kings squad at first hand tomorrow when he brings his Glasgow Storm club team to Portobello High for Kings’ first home Scottish League game of 2013 (3pm).

Though it would be a major shock if Kings were to crash to their one-time bogey team, Storm have been gradually improving this season and squeezed a 73-72 home win over Stirling Knights last Saturday.

With the on-form Lee Reilly a virtual certainty for the Scottish point guard position for the Euro C Championships later this year, it will be interesting to see if any of the other Kings guards strengthen their claims for selection, particularly Lee’s older brother Craig, and Garreth Lodge, who played for MacLean when he coached the Scottish Universities team two years ago.

Also playing at home tomorrow are fifth-place Boroughmuir Blaze, who can narrow the gap on the top four when they host third-placed Troon Tornadoes at the Crags (2.20pm). After Troon’s 40 point loss to Kings at Ayr last weekend Blaze must be hopeful of victory tomorrow.
