Basketball: Rose Anderson set to make history as first Scots basketballer to play in Olympics

Capital basketball star Rose Anderson has been officially named in the Great Britain team of 12 to compete in next month’s London 2012 Olympics and will make sporting history.

When the 24-year-old Portobello High School former pupil lines up against Australia in Team GB’s first game of the qualifying round in the 12,000-seater Olympic Park Arena on Saturday July 28 she will become the first Scot ever to play in an Olympic basketball tournament; for there was no women’s tournament in 1948 and even if the GB men include both Robert Archibald and Kieron Achara it will be the following day before they play their first game.

After moving to Oklahoma on a basketball scholarship and sitting out her final year as she had used up her eligibility under the strict US college rules, Anderson played in the English women’s first division last season for Cardiff-based Welsh club UWIC Archers, helping them win the league title for the first time.
