Basketball: Peregrines grind out win over Rocks

East Lothian Peregrines are celebrating only their second win of the season after wearing down Glasgow Rocks 81-71 in the Scottish League at Musselburgh Sports Centre last night.

Trailing 39-42 at half-time, after leading by as many as seven in the first half, Peregrines stuck with an up-tempo game, even when they had built up a reasonable lead, and they kept their supporters on tenterhooks for much of the second half before eventually pulling away.

"It's a win - and we've got St Mirren at home next week and we've already beaten them," said a delighted team manager Brian Ramsay.

Grant Gibson, with a mixture of drives and lay-ups and big three-pointers, easily led the home scoring with 30 points, centre Rob Jansson finishing with a late flurry for 16 while, for the visitors, Daniel Rajwuluk scrapped well for 24.

Falkirk Fury stormed out of the blocks to crush Stirling Knights 107-53 at the Peak Sports Centre, leading 28-13 after the first quarter and 54-21 by half-time, and reaching the end of the third 81-35 up.

"It was a poor performance from us," admitted Knights manager Derek Hargreaves.

Troon Tornadoes continue to struggle and went down 78-68 at home to Glasgow University last night.

Edinburgh University women are another side celebrating after crushing Sheffield Hallam 84-51 in the BUSA women's (knock-out) Cup at the Pleasance, Sarah O'Brien leading the scoring with 18.
