Basketball: League has tasty fare for the weekend

The much-improved Scottish Basketball League serves up three tasty clashes this weekend, none more so than at Musselburgh where the bruised but undaunted East Lothian Peregrines take on the Glasgow Rocks, Scottish League version.

Peregrines are still chasing their second win of the season after their opening day triumph over St Mirren and subsequent slump.

"Spirits are still high - we're still all fired up," claimed captain Grant Gibson, who may just have struck the nail on the head. Peregrines appear to be too fired up, as evidenced by their last match away to Stirling Knights, when three of their players were disqualified, centre Rob Jansson (for the third time this season), former coach Marcos Hernandez and Adam Johnstone.

New coach Alan McCormack face a tough job if he is to keep his bench in order and help the East Lothian outfit climb up the league, though normally Peregrines would have given league newcomers such as the Rocks short shrift.

There looks like there will be a full house at the Peak Centre tomorrow when Stirling Knights entertain local rivals Falkirk Fury for the first time.

In the third clash Troon Tornadoes try to stop Glasgow University's fine Scottish League run at the Citadel Centre, Ayr.

Edinburgh Kings, without a game this weekend due to the wedding of pivotal point guard Laurie Costello, have discovered that they will play the winners of the still-to-be-decided tie between Perth Phoenix and Pleasance (scheduled for Nov 24) in the first round proper of the Scottish Cup. The possible dates for this would be either Thursday December 2 or December 11.
