Basketball: Games venue up in the air

This season’s problem-hit British Universities Games may now be held in Nottingham after Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities were forced to give up their plan to act as hosts, due to snags over where to accommodate the athletes.

Basketball officials had been looking for hosts to put on a basketball-only Four Nations tournament, with Aberdeen suggested as a possible venue.

But earlier this week it emerged that Nottingham had submitted a bid to host a full British University Games. The decision to accept or not rests with the four Home Nations.

“We expect a final decision later today,” said Ross Simpson of Scottish Student Sport.

Regardless of the venue, coach Graham Gunn will hold a trial for the Scottish Universities women’s team at Holyrood High School on Sunday from 11am to 2pm.

Details of a men’s trial, to be held a week on Sunday, are expected to be finalised today.
