Basketball: Defeat leads to new reign at Peregrines

East Lothian Peregrines basketball club have announced that former coach Alan McCormack is to take charge of the senior men for the next four games after the club lost 106-95 away to previously winless Dunfermline Reign.

Current coach and former point guard Marcus Hernandez took his place on the team bench on Saturday with club secretary Brian Ramsay stepping in as emergency coach.

But Peregrines "drowned" in a sea of threes as the two sides traded 27 baskets from beyond the arc.

It was the Fifers' first win since they returned to the National League. Even though Swede Dennis Westerberg was back for EL, Reign were ahead 72-70 by the end of the third.

Under-strength Peregrines were without the suspended Rob Jansson, plus former Scottish Rocks guard Mike McGregor as well as Stefano Lucerno.

Peregrines, Reign and Glasgow Storm, who lost yesterday to Glasgow University 72-56, are all on one win at the foot of the table with Glasgow Rocks one win above. Rocks were no match for Edinburgh Kings at Cumbernauld on Saturday, Kings maintaining their 100 per cent record with a 96-55 win.

Kings juniors (54-35) and cadets (48-44) both won against St Mirren at Portobello, but the Capital junior highlight of the weekend was Euan Fairgrieve's buzzer-beater to give Boroughmuir Blaze a 72-70 home win over West Lothian Wolves at Wester Hailes yesterday.

Polonia Phoenix senior women beat St Mirren 60-49 but lost the junior (43-54) and cadette (46-74) games to the Saints.
